General
Shop Chop Chow is a household organisation tool. The information it shows — recipes, nutrition estimates, timings, costs, storage suggestions and shopping lists — is provided for general planning purposes only and can be incomplete, out of date or wrong. Use your own judgement, and where a decision affects health, safety or money, verify independently first.
Not professional advice
Nothing in Shop Chop Chow is medical, dietary, nutritional, or other professional advice. Calorie and nutrition figures (including macros, health scores and per-member goals) are estimates, frequently generated automatically by AI or derived from third-party data, and are not a substitute for advice from a doctor, dietitian or other qualified professional. If you have a medical condition or specific dietary needs, get professional advice before relying on anything in the app.
AI-generated content
Shop Chop Chow uses AI (Google Gemini) to import and analyse recipes, categorise ingredients, estimate nutrition, cost, effort and timings, identify scanned products, and generate dish photos. AI output can be wrong — plausible-looking but incorrect ingredients, quantities, steps, timings or images. Review AI-imported recipes before cooking from them.
Dish images may be AI-generated. They are illustrations of what a dish might look like — they do not depict a real prepared dish, and they are not photographs of food you will produce.
Allergies and dietary requirements — do not rely on the app
Dietary flags (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, egg-free, halal, kosher and others) may be assigned automatically and may be incorrect or incomplete, and imported recipes may omit or mislabel ingredients. Never use Shop Chop Chow as the safety check for an allergy, intolerance, or religious or medical dietary requirement. Always verify every ingredient, preparation method and cross-contamination risk yourself, from the actual product packaging and your own sources.
Food safety and storage
Leftover tracking, storage-condition notes (fridge/freezer/room temperature), expiry dates and "expiring soon" indicators are memory aids — they are not food safety assessments.
Note that expiry dates in the app are either entered by you or estimated by the app from an item's name and how it is stored. An estimated date is a rough guide, not a use-by date, and the app cannot know how food was actually handled, stored or reheated. Follow official food-safety guidance, check the actual packaging, and when in doubt, throw it out.
Barcode and product data
When you scan a barcode, we look it up in the Open Food Facts family of volunteer-maintained public databases (Open Food Facts, Open Beauty Facts, Open Pet Food Facts and Open Products Facts), used under the Open Database Licence (opendatabaselicense.org). We retrieve the product name, brand, quantity and category; product images are displayed directly from their servers.
We do not retrieve the ingredient or allergen fields from those databases, and the app does not show them. Never treat a scanned product's entry as an ingredient or allergen source. Coverage and accuracy vary, and an entry may not match the exact product in your hand — especially for regional variants. Check the physical label.
Third-party websites and imported recipes
Recipe import fetches or accepts content from external websites. We don't control those sites, don't endorse them, and aren't responsible for their content, accuracy or terms. Rights in imported recipes remain with their owners; importing content for your household is done at your direction and on your responsibility.
This doesn't exclude responsibility for our own errors — for example, mistakes our app makes in extracting, interpreting or displaying content from a third-party site or database.
Cost estimates
Cost-per-serve and budget figures are estimates from the prices and quantities you (or the AI) entered. Actual shop prices vary. Don't treat them as financial advice or a guaranteed spend.
Service availability
We aim for reliability but Shop Chop Chow is provided "as is" and "as available" — outages, data-sync delays and feature changes can happen. Export your data (Settings → Export) if you want an independent copy. Nothing on this page excludes rights you have under the Australian Consumer Law that cannot lawfully be excluded.
